This year’s Nobel Peace Prize has been announced. Maria Corina Machado has received the honor, thus missing out on US President Donald Trump.

Dashing US President Donald Trump’s hopes, the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded on Friday (October 10) to Venezuela’s main opposition leader, Maria Corina Machado, who is currently in hiding in her own country.

Machado, also known as the “Iron Lady,” is included in Time magazine’s list of the “100 Most Influential People of 2025.” Announcing the award, the Nobel Committee chair praised Machado as a courageous and committed champion of peace who keeps the flame of democracy burning amid growing darkness.

During the announcement of the award, the Nobel Committee stated that it honored Machado for her tireless work in promoting the democratic rights of the Venezuelan people and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.

Machado founded the organization Sumate, which works for the betterment of democracy and has consistently demanded free and fair elections.

It should be noted that Maria Corina Machado was the opposition’s presidential candidate before the 2024 elections, but the Venezuelan government rejected her candidacy.

The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded to individuals or organizations that make significant contributions to world peace, human rights, and preventing war.

This year, US President Donald Trump was also in the running for the Nobel Peace Prize, but he missed out. According to reports, eight countries had nominated Trump for the Nobel Prize, including Pakistan, Israel, the United States, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Malta, and Cambodia.
